Job Description
The Communications Officer is responsible for developing and implementing effective communication strategies that enhance the organization’s visibility, engagement, and mission-driven goals and objectives. This role manages digital content across web and social platforms, ensures consistent messaging, and supports internal and external communications. The position also maintains the organization’s website and external communication and collaborates with teams to support outreach, advocacy, and development efforts.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with the President and CEO and Executive Team to develop, establish and implement a comprehensive communication strategy that aligns organizational goals, supports advocacy efforts and priorities, and enhances public understanding.
- Work closely with program, development, and leadership teams to gather stories, data, and impact narratives that support communications goals and highlight organizational achievements.
- Manage the organization’s website and digital platforms, ensuring content is accurate, timely, accessible and aligned with brand and mission. Coordinate with developers or technical services staff for updates and improvements.
- Manage the organization's social media presence (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, X LinkedIn) and monitor analytics to optimize engagement and inform content strategy.
- Draft and distribute press releases, op-eds, and media advisories. Serve as a point of contact for media and communication inquiries cultivating relationships with journalists, media outlets and the public.
- Develop and manage internal and external newsletters, announcements, and blog posts, to ensure consistent messaging and information flow across the organization.
- Ensure consistency in visual identity, tone, and messaging across all communication channels.
- Manage push notifications and mobile app banners for key events such as hearings, board meetings, and press conferences.
- Design and manage communication assets for key initiatives such as events, youth programs, advocacy campaigns and fundraising efforts.
- Promote events, programs, and other activities through digital channels, push notifications, and mobile app banners.
- Ensure brand consistency and accessibility across all communication channels and materials ensuring consistency in visual identity, tone and messaging.
- Monitor analytics and engagement metrics to inform content strategy and improve outreach effectiveness.
- Contribute to additional projects and organizational initiatives as needed, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to mission-driven work.
- Draft speeches, talking points and executive communications as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects) and Canva. Experience with video editing software such as Premiere or DaVinci Resolve is a plus.
- Experience managing websites and digital platforms, including familiarity with content management systems (e.g., WordPress), basic HTML/CSS, and SEO best practices.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling content for diverse audiences across multiple platforms (e.g., newsletters, press releases, blog posts, social media).
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with experience leading cross-functional teams, managing freelancers, and coordinating multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Ability to analyze engagement metrics and use data to inform content strategy and improve outreach effectiveness.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments, build relationships with stakeholders, and contribute to a positive team culture.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, OneDrive), Adobe Acrobat, and project management tools (e.g., Trello, Asana, or similar).
- The ability to adapt to shifting priorities, take initiative, and contribute to organizational growth through creative problem-solving and continuous learning.
WORK HOURS:
This position follows a standard on-site work schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with a one-hour unpaid lunch break.
