Reporter / Photographer

Overall Responsibility:

The Hawaii Catholic Herald reporter/photographer provides written and photographic content for the newspaper. The reporter/photographer also assists in pre-press production, website development and internet social media dissemination, and other newspaper tasks as directed by the editor.

Reports to: Editor of the Hawaii Catholic Herald Classification: Exempt

Position Summary:

· Reports and writes a variety of news and feature stories for the Hawaii Catholic Herald about the Catholic Church in Hawaii as assigned by the editor.

· Serves as the primary photographer for the Hawaii Catholic Herald, taking photos to accompany stories, and as stand-alone photo features.

· Catalogues and edits Hawaii Catholic Herald photos.

· Assists in proofreading the newspaper before it goes to print.

· Assists in page design and layout.

· Produces regular special editorial features in collaboration with the editor.

· Assists the editor in producing the Hawaii Catholic Herald website.

· Assists the editor in other online ways of promoting, distributing and disseminating the content of the newspaper through social media and other digital means.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Active member of a Roman Catholic parish faith community preferred

· Bachelor’s degree in journalism/communications

· 2 years journalism and photography experience

· Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, and social media programs

Scheduling and travel requirements

· Entails periodic evening and weekend work

· Requires periodic overnight travel

· Valid driver’s license required
