About the Program
The Skills We Need (TSWN) is a distinctive summer bridge program designed specifically for rising 2nd and
3rd graders from HIDOE Title 1 schools. Our mission is to provide child-centered, collaborative, and interactive
experiences that build the foundation for lifelong learning. Rooted in Hanahauʻoli’s 100-year tradition of
progressive education, TSWN focuses on the "happy work" of childhood—integrating literacy, math, and
social-emotional learning through thematic, hands-on inquiry.
We believe that learning is a social endeavor. In our multi-age classrooms, we prioritize play, discovery, and
the "maker mindset," helping students from diverse backgrounds navigate a changing world with confidence
and heart.
The Role: Co-Teacher & Mentee
We are looking for energetic, recently graduated or "new" teachers who are eager to dive into the world of
progressive pedagogy. As a Co-Teacher, you won’t just be an assistant; you will be a vital partner in the
classroom. You will work alongside a seasoned Hanahauʻoli Lead Teacher, receiving direct mentorship in:
Integrated Curriculum Design: Coordinating and delivering interdisciplinary lessons that spark wonder.
Progressive Assessment: Learning to assess student work through observation ( kilo ), reflection, and documentation rather than traditional testing.
Responsive Teaching: Supporting individual student needs in a multi-age setting.
Community Building: Cultivating a classroom culture where every child is known, valued, and loved.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate daily with your Lead Teacher to plan and refine thematic units.
Lead small group instruction and support whole-class activities.
Foster a safe, joyful environment where children feel empowered to take risks.
Assist with student arrival/dismissal and other standard "teacher-life" duties with a positive spirit.
Participate in mentorship sessions to reflect on your practice and growth.
Who You Are
A Recent Graduate: You have recently earned your teaching degree/certification and are looking for a
high-impact "first step" in your career.
A Lifelong Learner: You are curious about John Dewey’s "learning by doing" and want to see
progressive education in action.
Joyful & Direct: You communicate with clarity and bring a sense of fun to your work.
Collaborative: You believe that we are better when we work together ( Kākou ).
Why Join Us?
Professional Growth: This is essentially a "masterclass"
in progressive teaching. You will leave with a
toolkit of strategies for project-based learning and social-emotional integration.
Inspiration: Work on a campus that celebrates childhood. From our Physical World Lab to our
Collaborative Studio, you will be surrounded by innovation.
Impact: Help bridge the gap for students during the critical summer months, ensuring they return to
school with the skills and confidence they need to thrive.
Pay range $2,500 - $5,625
