PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Conservation Leadership Development Program (CLDP) has been developed for individuals who are looking for an intensive entry-level experience in preparation for a career in the conservation field. We welcome recent high school graduates, working young adults, and recent college graduates to apply to the program. Members are selected to serve at a single host site that best matches the individual’s interests. Applicants must be comfortable serving in rugged environments, and be able to perform physically demanding duties.

 

TYPE OF WORK/HOST SITES: Through the CLDP, host sites typically only offer service in the conservation field; however, in response to the wildfires and the needs of the community, conservation leaders may also be placed with non-profit organizations that provide support to the impacted community. 

- Conservation service includes: land stewardship, reforestation, native plant management, sustainable agriculture, native wildlife management, fire mitigation, and more!

- Community support service includes: food production, resource distribution, service coordination, structure buildling, education, community outreach, and more! 

 

AVAILABILITY: There will be one or more positions on each of the following islands: Hawaiʿi Island, Kauaʿi, Maui, Molokaʿi, Oʿahu, American Samoa, Guam, and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (Rota and Saipan).

The number of positions and areas in which positions are available are subject to change. For a member to finish their term as scheduled, members will need to commit to 40 hours per pay period.

 

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be at least 17 years of age by program start date
  • Possess/be working towards high school diploma or equivalent
  • Have own housing and transportation
  • Pass a criminal history check
  • Meet the necessary physical and behavioral requirements

 

BENEFITS:

  • Members will be paid a fixed living stipend bi-weekly, this stipend is equivalent to $16.00 per hour
  • Education Award through Kupu’s largest supporter, AmeriCorps: Half Time Term = $3,447.50 and Full Time Term = $6,895.00
