About Us

The mission of Kelea Foundation is to make sports and the ocean more accessible to our entire community. We recognize that in order for people to get to the ocean, they must also be able to get to the beach. We work to create an accessible community overall so that everyone can gain equal access to recreation and the Ocean. In the wake of the Maui Fires, Kelea Foundation has been working with community partners to advocate for people with disabilities. We receive, organize and distribute donated medical supplies and durable equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, bath safety supplies and more. In addition to helping to manage donations specific to the disability community, we work to advocate at both the individual and operational level to ensure that survivors with disabilities are getting the resources they need throughout the fire recovery.

Position Title: Inclusive Recovery Recreation Specialist

Location: Maui, Hawaii

Salary: $30/hr 
(Currently grant funded for 1 year term. That does not change the at will status of your employment)

Residency: This position is based in Maui, Hawaii.

This position is flexible with working locations. Much of the work can be done remotely and requires the ability to use the phone and internet. Some travel throughout Maui County will be required to attend meetings and meet the needs of survivors.

The Opportunity

Our dynamic and impactful non-profit organization is seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to serve as Inclusive Recovery Recreational Specialist. The successful candidate will be a creative and resourceful champion for fire survivors living with disabilities. As a powerful force through our recovery efforts, alongside our board of directors, volunteers and the  Inclusive Recovery Program Director, the Recreation Specialist will be responsible for creative inclusive and adaptive recreational programming for Maui fire survivors. This includes outdoor recreation such as adaptive beach days, adaptive surf, kayak and snorkel opportunities as well as indoor recreational activities such as adaptive exercise clinics, mindfulness workshops and social events. This person will be responsible for managing and maintaining appropriate equipment and should have a good working knowledge of how to care for surfboards, bikes, wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment. This person will also assist the director in providing training to other organizations in how to create inclusive environments for their own recreational and programatic activities. They will help to build community through sports and bridge gaps between the disabled and non disabled communities, supporting the overall wellness of fire survivors.

Position Description:

Under the direction of the Porgram Director, this position will design and implement inclusive recreational opportunities for Maui fire survivors with disabilities. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the Inclusive Recovery Program Director as needed on various projects that fulfill the mission of an inclusive recovery 
  • Attend meetings as needed to maintain strong community relationships and stay up to date on vital information and resources.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community members, organizations and agency leaders to build a robust network of providers and stakeholders
  • Identify and support individuals with disability in accessing the outdoors and recreational opportunities
  • Advocate for physical accessibility within the counties built environment, particularly relating to beach and recreation access
  • Manage recreational equipment
  • Organize and provide transportation for survivors and their families as needed
  • Identify needs in the community and communicate them to the Program Director
  • Organize inclusive recreation and therapeutic programming for survivors, their families and care takers. 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • Previous experience working in outdoor recreation
  • Strong familiarity with the culture of Maui and working in rural communities
  • Experience in adaptive sports 
  • Familiarity with Durable Medical Equipment, Adaptive recreation equipment and accessibility
  • Strong familiarity with fire recovery resources as well as community wide resources. 
  • Trauma informed care training
  • Strong connection and knowledge of outdoor recreational opportunities and ocean conditions on Maui

  • Lifeguard certified
