Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science PCS seeks the following position for the
2026-2027 school year:
Teacher, Hawaiian Studies Several positions available for grades K-12 including Teachers, Elective Instructor, Teacher Assistant and Paraprofessional Educator.
Summary: Plans, organizes and implements an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Delivers effective instruction. Monitors student progress. Communicates with students and parents. Kumus and support staff work with other resource and classroom teachers to create a collaborative rotating yearly schedule. Kumus and support staff plan and facilitate two annual schoolwide events: Makahiki and Hōʻike. Assignments vary and may include subjects such as: Hawaiian Culture, Hawaiian Language, Hula, Hōʻike/May Day Events, Lei Making, Makahiki Games, Ukulele, Mele & Oli. Works with multiple grade levels for various activities and events. This may include teaching electives for grades 7-12 such as Hula, Hawaiian Arts, Hawaiian Studies and Hawaiian Language. Provides classroom instruction at multiple sites on and off campus. Daily access to a vehicle and valid driver license are required.
Education, Experience and Qualifications: Able to meet one of the three requirements from the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB): https://www.hawaiiteacherstandardsboard.org/
1) Teacher License with applicable endorsement in Hawaiian Studies,
or 2) Emergency Hire Permit: An Emergency Hire Permit may be issued to an unlicensed individual who wishes to teach in a HIDOE or HIPCS in a shortage area or hard-to-fill position when no licensed teacher is available. or 3) Hawaiian Permit: A Hawaiian Permit may be issued to an unlicensed individual employed by a HIDOE or HIPCS in Kaiaʻōlelo‐Kaiapuni Hawaiʻi, Hawaiian Language Immersion, or Hawaiian Knowledge classrooms when no licensed teacher is available. Applicants must be recommended by the Office of Hawaiian Education (OHE) for this permit. Term of Validity: 1 year, may be reissued four times for a term of 5 years. Relevant experience working with school age children.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Valid driver license, satisfactory traffic abstract, daily access to a registered and insured vehicle.
Desired skills: Ability to teach hula and oli, play ukulele and sing, lei making, ability to teach Hawaiian arts and Hawaiian cultural practices, skilled in decorating and sewing. Fluent in Hawaiian and able to teach Hawaiian Language Elective for grades 9-12.
Must be willing to teach in a variety of settings and share classroom space.
Knowledge of Hawaii State Standards; student/classroom management techniques; common academic, social, behavioral and developmental problems of students. Ability to implement effective classroom management and student care methods and techniques; speak and work effectively with students, teachers, parents and community members; assess students' progress and modify learning activities and methods as necessary.
Must be ethical and honest. Must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, time management, follow-through, and oral and written communication skills. Must be extremely flexible and able to work independently.
Must be knowledgeable and comfortable working with technology and software programs, and be able to acquire additional skills for use of software, databases or other information systems as necessary.
Must be able to meet professional obligations through effective work habits such as: meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating resources in an effective and timely manner, and demonstrating respect for others. Must be able to successfully analyze information, manage complexity, report results, enter data, and observe school and state policies as well as state and federal laws with attention to detail, confidentiality, and thoroughness. Must accept responsibility and be self-motivated. Must maintain a high level of confidentiality with regard to employees, students and parents and work effectively with school staff, district personnel, and the general public.
