Heavy Diesel Mechanic

Our transportation organization is seeking a qualified Heavy Diesel Mechanic to join our maintenance team. This position offers an opportunity to work with a diverse fleet of commercial vehicles and equipment in a professional environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our heavy-duty diesel vehicles through expert diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance services.

Responsibilities:

Perform comprehensive diagnostics on heavy diesel engines, transmissions, and related systems to identify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues. Conduct routine preventive maintenance services including oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and system inspections according to manufacturer specifications and company standards. Execute major and minor repairs on diesel engines, including but not limited to fuel systems, cooling systems, air intake systems, and exhaust systems. Diagnose and repair transmission systems, drive trains, differentials, and clutch assemblies. Inspect, maintain, and repair brake systems, steering mechanisms, and suspension components to ensure vehicle safety and compliance with DOT regulations. Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, including batteries, alternators, starters, and electronic control modules. Perform welding and fabrication work as needed for repairs and modifications. Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts used and labor hours. Conduct thorough post-repair inspections and road tests to verify proper vehicle operation. Collaborate with team members and management to prioritize work orders and meet operational deadlines. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in compliance with OSHA standards. Respond to emergency breakdown situations and provide roadside assistance when required.

Requirements:

Minimum of three years of experience as a heavy diesel mechanic working on commercial trucks, buses, or heavy equipment. Comprehensive knowledge of diesel engine systems, including Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar, or similar manufacturers. Proficiency in using diagnostic software and electronic diagnostic equipment. Strong understanding of air brake systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic codes. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred but not required. Possession of personal hand tools appropriate for heavy diesel repair work. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high-quality standards. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Physical capability to lift up to 75 pounds and work in various positions including standing, bending, and lying down for extended periods. Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and on-call shifts as needed. ASE certifications in relevant areas are highly preferred. Proficiency in English language for communication and documentation purposes.
