Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated staff member to join our team. The shelter custodian team member is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for participants, staff, and visitors with the emergency shelter. This role supports the overall operation of the shelter by ensuring cleanliness, managing supplies, and following health and safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities:
- Clean and disinfect bathrooms, sleeping areas, common areas, offices, kitchens, and other facility spaces daily or as scheduled.
- Replenish supplies such as soap, toilet paper, paper towels, and cleaning products.
- Monitor inventory of cleaning and janitorial supplies; notify supervisor of low stock.
- Dispose of trash and biohazard waste according to safety guidelines
- Perform floor care, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and stripping, cleaning and waxing floors.
- Assist with laundry duties as needed (e.g. bed lines, towels).
- Respond to emergency clean-up situations such as spills, bodily fluids, or other urgent sanitation issues.
- Report maintenance needs, safety hazards, or repair issues to management promptly.
- Perform light maintenance repairs as directed.
- Support setup and breakdown of sleeping arrangements, meal areas, or events as directed
- Ensure compliance with health, fire, and safety regulations.
- Properly clean and store all equipment and supplies after each shift
- Interact professionally and respectfully with shelter participants, staff and visitors, and maintain confidentiality and sensitivity at all times.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Prior custodial or janitorial experience, especially in residential or institutional settings, is a plus.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as bending, reaching, standing, and walking for extended periods.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safe handling procedures is preferred (training will be provided upon hire).
- Ability to learn safety requirements through ongoing training and communication.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to serving vulnerable populations in a respectful, nonjudgmental manner.
- Background check and/or drug screening may be required.
Work Environment:
- Working indoors and outdoors in warm temperatures.
- Exposure to cleaning agents and possibly individuals in distress.
- Expectation to wear PPE, as needed, and provided by employer
