Position Overview:
We are seeking a Shelter Program Assistant to join our Operations team. This team member should be comfortable and capable of providing security and support to ensure the safety and well-being of participants, staff, visitors, and volunteers within an emergency shelter environment. This role will assist with daily operations, complete documentation in an accurate and timely manner, and ensure that shelter policies are followed. Responsibilities may include oversight of the office, enforcing rules, settling disputes, overseeing the cleanliness of the property, and communicating with county safety personnel as needed. Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a compassionate approach are essential in this role. This position will require shift work as our operations department runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor entrances, exits, and common areas to ensure a safe environment.
- Conduct regular security checks of the shelter facility, always following safety protocols, including sleeping quarters, dining areas, and external perimeter.
- During an assigned shift, enforces rules, settles disputes, imposes penalties, and oversees and records daily chore performance.
- Responds to crises, provides support, and de-escalates situations as needed. May need to call in county safety personnel at times.
- Oversee the general cleanliness of the property by performing independent checks.
- Communicates general repair requests to the Facilities Manager.
- Performs fire evacuation drills and quarterly inspections on all apartments for damage and cleanliness.
- Prepares daily and weekly written records, incident reports and eviction notices as required in a timely and accurate manner.
- Treat all participants, staff, visitors, and volunteers with dignity and respect, always maintaining confidentiality.
- Understands computers and various computer programs, such as MS Word, Excel, or other databases.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Current driver’s license.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as bending, reaching, standing, and walking for extended periods.
- Experience in security or shelter operations is strongly preferred.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language.
- Ability to perform CPR and first aid as needed and ability to learn safety requirements through ongoing training and communication.
- Flexibility to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Commitment to serving vulnerable populations in a respectful, nonjudgmental manner.
- Background check and/or drug screening may be required.
Work Environment:
- Shelter environment with variable noise levels, crowds, and stressful situations.
- Standing/walking for extended periods and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs..
- Exposure to individuals experiencing trauma, mental health challenges, or substance use.
